Toothill Long Poem

13 May

Disappointed I didn’t get to see / hear this one.

I spoke to organiser Hilda Sheehan (as herself this time, not Domestic Cherry Mabel) in between FLIT 180 and Swindon Slam! and she was very pleased with how the world premiere of the Toothill Long Poem turned out.

Just like any event like this, she worried it wasn’t going to come off. However, it was alright on the night (day), with parents, head teachers and even the Swindon mayor elect turning up.

Hilda’s been working with children in West Swindon, using their words to create a 500 line poem, The Watchers.

“It was quite moving,” she said. “The old people who were written about in the poem came to hear it. It was a real community event.”

The poem is based on TS Elliot’s The Wasteland, ‘but an uplifting version,’ said Hilda.

The Watchers is available as a book. For more info, see http://toothilllongpoem.blogspot.co.uk/
